Whether you’re training for a marathon or running or walking outside to stay in shape, out on the beach for kitesurf, into playing golf or tennis your eyes will take a beating from the sun. So, how should you choose the right sunglasses to protect your eyes?
There are thousands of stylish, colorful options on the market, but your first priority should be eye protection. The lens materials, color of the lenses and the coatings defend your eyes from the dangers of the sun; and there are different options for different outdoor light conditions.
For Watersports
The Waterman model, designed for fast action and the most rugged outdoor activities, these are the ultimate polarized sunglasses with clear, colorful views, wide-band gripping power and a unique aerodynamic venting system that lets wind and water whip by.
Strategically placed lens vents to quickly dry water captured inside the lens. The Waterman model allows for maximum air circulation, less wind resistance and fog-free vision. The lightweight nylon frame has a soft rubber inlay that completely cups your eyes in aerodynamic, wind-breaking lens protection. The contoured temple design easily slips under helmets. Then, tighten the whole frame down for a wild ride using the fully-adjustable, cushioned head strap that holds securely in place for a day of activity without slipping or falling off. The hardware is anti-corrosive.
For Fishing
While out at sea, you’ll encounter the iridescent brilliance of fish of all colors. So, this summer, discover Kipahulu model in Marlin with HCL™ Bronze Lenses. The ST (SuperThin) Glass lenses deliver clear, undistorted views and are 20 percent lighter and thinner than conventional glass lenses. They feature anticorrosive spring hinges and embedded rubber nose pads and temples for added stability and comfort. The two-toned Marlin frame color gradually transition from a rich glossy grey/brown to an iridescent blue emulative of the fish’s coloring. They have HCL™ Bronze lenses for superior protection in variable light conditions. Kipahulu fits small to mid-size faces and they are available with MauiPassport® prescription lenses in powers from +3.00 to -6.50.
For Tennis
Glare, from the sun or indoor tennis arena lighting, reflecting off of smooth, flat or shiny surfaces also poses risks. Not only will it cause eye fatigue, but also it can severely affect visual acuity. Many sunglasses only block glare that hits the front of the lenses. Maui Jim is one of the only companies whose lenses block 99.9 percent of glare from above, below and behind each lens. They also use anti-reflective treatments that are specifically designed to eliminate eye fatigue. Apapane model of Maui Jim, with its PolarizedPlus2® lens technology, not only cuts glare but also uses three rare earth elements and other compounds in the lenses to enhance the colors, depth of field and definition of what you see. This means you will see a significant improvement in your ability to spot white or yellow balls bouncing off of green, red or blue courts. The technology also significantly enhances definition and increases depth perception, improving your ability to more accurately see the ball, make judgments about speed and direction and enjoy the match.
For Running
Choosing the right lens material for how you use your sunglasses is also important. Glass lenses offer the clearest edge-to-edge optics. However, glass lenses are not designed for active sports. For running, polycarbonate or some of the new hybrid lenses are your best choice because of their scratch- and impact-resistance. For example Olowalu model of Maui Jim’s MauiPure™ lens is the world’s clearest non-glass lens that is also feather light, scratch- and impact-resistant.
For Golf
Lens color should be based on the conditions in which you will wear your sunglasses. You may need two or three pairs of glasses for optimal vision in a variety of conditions. Neutral Grey lenses offer the highest level of light reduction for bright, sunny days. Maui Jim’s HCL® Bronze lenses have a versatile, all-activity, warm brown tint designed to improve vision in variable light conditions. Maui Rose™ lenses are blush-colored for maximum contrast and crisp vision; and are particularly good for fast-moving sports. Maui HT™ is a high-performance, palm green color that is particularly good for golf because it lets the right amount of useful light into the eye to improve definition and depth perception without losing polarization efficiency. With Sandhill model’s green lens color, you can golf from dawn until dusk without a lens change.
