The Flag Island, Sharjah's premier tourist destination, will turn into a fitness boot camp this Thursday and Friday (27 & 28 April) with the 'Unleash Your Potential' event organised as part of their fitness programme, aimed at promoting awareness among members of community about the importance of exercising and leading a healthy lifestyle.
The event will showcase the strengths of the Flag Island as an ideal destination for hosting sporting scale outdoor events, especially ones dealing with health and lifestyle given the Island’s picturesque surroundings world-class jogging tracks, lush lawns and other fitness infrastructure.
On both days from 5pm to 10 pm, visitors will participate in an array of popular sporting activities like open air yoga, cardio, badminton, volleyball, jogging and walking, and will have the chance to attend specialised sessions on fitness taken by health experts.
Self-defense classes in karate and martial arts were organised for children. Various sports brands, government organisations and sports clubs, including Sharjah Sports Council, Sharjah Women's Sports Foundation and Sajaya Young Ladies of Sharjah, are collaborating to host the event.
Khulood Al Junaibi, Manager of the Flag Island, said: “Unleash Your Potential is one of the very important sporting events organised on the Island. We are always eager to offer our visitors novel, entertaining experiences. Keeping to this theme is especially important while trying to attract people to a fitness event because that is one aspect of life a lot of us tend to avoid. The Island’s open picturesque spaces, exercise-friendly atmosphere, and family-friendly environment has attracted lots of people keen to adopt a healthy lifestyle.”
On the side-lines, the Flag Island will conduct several workshops in collaboration with leading brands specialising in women's healthcare. Focusing on the interests and concerns of pre-teen girls, as well as their relationship with their mothers, these workshops are aimed to empower them with information to address common health-related transformations experienced at their age.
Participants will be offered medical examinations onsite, and will learn about healthy foods along with tips on maintaining youthful skin. A wide range of sports products from leading UAE and international brand were on display.
In future, the Flag Island plans to organise a variety of activities in collaboration with the Social Club for the elderly, which will include yoga sessions for women, including power yoga and special classes for new mothers.
Located near the Government Department Complex in Al Layyah, and adjacent to Souq Al Jubail, Flag Island was inaugurated in 2012. It’s home to a 123-metre flagpole raised at the centre – 7th tallest in the world when erected. The flagpole and the 30x15m UAE flag tied to it glow in the evenings surrounded by a magnificent light display.
Flag Island is characterised by its unique design, with a circle of seven lights representing the seven emirates, surrounding the flag and shine on it to reveal the nation’s glory day and night. It houses various leisure facilities, including a 1,000-seater open-air theatre, 1971 Design Space and the internationally acclaimed deli, Jones the Grocer.
