SCRF reveals science’s cool side with floating Ping Pong balls, catapults and egg drops

Science is cool – that’s the message that’s being shared at the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival 2016, currently underway at the Expo Centre Sharjah.

Organised by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) and running over 11 days until April 30, the festival is encouraging young children to explore the magical world of science during workshops that aim to showcase the subject in a fun and interactive way.

“In our force and motion sessions, we focus on getting kids to explore different concepts of physics, by making floating Ping Pong balls and launching catapults that they can take home afterwards,” Professor Roldan Bauyon from Russian company Cool Science begins. “Catapult physics basically teaches kids about the use of stored energy to hurl a projectile, with the three primary energy storage mechanisms being tension, torsion and gravity. It’s a great, hands-on activity – and it’s super fun!”

The egg drop – that can be credited to Sir Isaac Newton and his First Law of Motion – is another classic science project that little scientists will love experimenting at the festival.

“All scientists start out being curious, so the whole idea is to get kids asking questions,” Cool Science’s Professor Michael Agordzo explains.

There will be an hour-long science workshop – aimed at children four years and older and presented by different science specialists – happening everyday throughout the 11-day festival.
