Lughati Celebrates National Library Week

Lughati, the smart Arabic learning initiative that aims to support the studying of Arabic in Sharjah schools using modern technology, has organised a series of activities in collaboration with Al Darari Kindergarten. Coinciding with National Library Week, which is celebrated annually from April 10-16, the event took place at Al Darari Kindergarten Library, with the aim of encouraging children to visit the facility and enjoy its books.

Lughati’s initiative featured a number of cultural and literary activities that focused on children reading using modern methods, in particular through the use of tablet devices that were previously distributed by the project.

Among the activities that the children took part in as part of the initiative were the reading of several engaging stories through the tablets. The youngsters showed their reading aloud skills during the ‘Young Narrator’ activity, with recitals also given from ‘Butterfly,’ a title published by Kalimat Group. The children also showed their enthusiasm for the theatrical adaptation of ‘What Beautiful Clothing,’ a story from ‘Big Book,’ another Kalimat Group title.

Badria Abdullah Al Ali, Manager of the Lughati initiative, said; “Our participation in National Library Week stems from our endeavour to restore the importance of the school library as one of the most important information and knowledge sources for children and students. The activity was instigated to shed light on the essential influence that the school library has in promoting a culture of reading through its vital role as a pillar of self-education.”

Al Ali added; “We were keen that the events we organised had a transformative effect on the role of libraries and librarians by introducing modern educational methods that encourage children to read. At Lughati, we strive to support the learning of the Arabic language in smart ways and as this year’s National Library Week is devoted to developing libraries through integrating technology into reading, we felt it essential that our contribution be one that encompasses this activity.”

Al Ali emphasised that the love of reading is an internal sense that grows with the child from an early age. She said that family, kindergarten and school have a responsibility for attracting children to reading and learning and it is through these three institutions that individuals’ personalities are formed and educated generations are brought up able to contribute to the advancement of society. She pointed out that the Lughati initiative is mainly concerned with teaching children the Arabic language in smart and modern ways, with the studying of language as an essential prerequisite for the acquisition of a broad base of knowledge.

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, launched Lughati in 2013. It was one of a number of initiatives that aim to develop education in the emirate, preserve the Arabic language and endear Arabic studies to children by incorporating modern methods.

The Lughati smart learning initiative was approved by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah in January this year. It represents the educational and scientific response to the requirements of smart learning methods, with its introduction designed to help build a knowledge-based society through elevating the forms of education employed in schools and kindergartens.
