During the felicitation ceremony for the sponsors of the State of Green Economy Report 2016 organised by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence, in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world’s largest district cooling services provider, was honored being the Platinum Sponsor.
The State of Green Economy Report is the first published knowledge product that shares best practices and details the policies through which the United Arab Emirates aims to transform into a model of green economy.
The State of Green Economy 2016 was presented to the international audience during the World Climate Summit in Paris in December 2015. The Report sheds light on policies through which the UAE aims to transform into a model of Green Economy. This implies following the guidance of our leadership in achieving growth and development while minimising the ecological impact in line with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It also refers to the efforts made to encourage enabling various sectors to participate in the transition to a green economy.
“In line with the ‘Green Economy for Sustainable Development’ initiative launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to achieve an environmentally friendly future, The Government of Dubai is putting big efforts in sustainable development and green economy. We, at Empower, seek to contribute to it by disseminating district cooling as an alternative method to conventional cooling, which tremendously consumes energy sources that are reliant on oil,” says HE Ahmad Bin Shafar, Chief Executive Officer of Empower.
The State of Green Economy 2016 was complimentary to the launch of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050. The Strategy was launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and aims at transforming Dubai into an international hub for clean renewable energy and green economy. The objective of this ambitious strategy is to save 7% of Dubai’s energy resources by 2020, 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050.
“Over the past four decades, the UAE has achieved significant growth on different economic levels. It has become necessary to apply the green economy elements by diversifying energy sources and promote reliance on clean and renewable energy,” added Bin Shafar.
State of Green Economy Report 2016 highlights major developments in energy sector in Dubai.
“We sponsor this report because we appreciate the importance of green economy. The report reviews the latest research and innovations carried out by green corporations including Empower,” said Bin Shafar.
The report presents case studies of governmental institutions and agencies to promote development and innovation of green economy. It highlights major topics such as smart cities, clean energy, smart living, tourism, finance, green investments and green industry.

The State of Green Economy Report was prepared with the participation of several public and private organisations and departments, including Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (DCCE), in collaboration with the UNDP.
